A star that was previously too dim to observe brightened suddenly due to a cataclysmic nuclear explosion known as a nova.  Nova are caused by the accretion of hydrogen onto the surface of a white dwarf star, and are not to be confused with Type 1a supernovae - another form of stellar explosion.
